Employing the latest Ambarella A5s core processor chipset boasts many exciting new features including Wi-Fi integration, higher frame rates at lower resolution, serial sensor connection and a much higher video encoding bit rate.

The upgrade to the A5s processor allows the new GoPro HD HERO2 cameras to provide a
sharper image, increased low light performance and better colours by allowing the camera to connect to the latest generation CMOS sensors.

The new sensor produces 11 megapixel still photographs and a burst mode that enables the
camera to take 10 images a second. For awesome time lapse photography, full resolution
photographs can be captured every 0.5 seconds. A5s can also record at 120 frames per second when in 848×600 pixel mode.

GoPro claim the new glass wide angled lens on the HD HERO2 camera produces x2 sharper images. The lens is still very wide, providing a maximum 170 degrees field of vision with long depth of view. Selecting other video resolutions, where only part of the sensor is used, effectively reduces the angle of view to as low as 90 degrees.

Greater ease of use is the major benefit of the larger LCD screen on the front of the GoPro
HD HERO2 camera. The previous GoPro HD cameras had a smaller LCD screen and the
menu options were represented by a somewhat cryptic letters and numbers arrangement.
Making changes to the GoPro HD HERO2 camera settings is now much easier and there’s no need to carry around the manual for reference.

In addition to the latest generation of HD HERO camera systems, GoPro further announced new ‘BacPac’ accessories compatible with both the original HD HERO and the new HD HERO2 camera systems. Despite the team having to burn several gallons of midnight oil to make the event, thanks to a full engine rebuild being required after ECU problems during testing, driver Jon Mathers found instant form to blitz to the top spot in Club class on day one, and second on day two of the meeting. With 16,000 Time Attack fans to cheers him on, it was the best showing yet for the Cross Roads garage prepared machine and a superb example of how the new Pro-R range of tuning components can perform under pressure.The car was sporting some exciting new enhancements for Brands, including a lightweight, bespoke Scorpion Exhausts extraction system, which managed to net the team more power, despite being under the series’ strict noise regulations as well as improved cooling and lightweight body panels by the team’s technical partners at ABW.

Saturday started with damp conditions, but the Cross Roads team quickly found the ideal set-up and a confident Mathers simply went out and posted ONE hot lap in a move that saw him go straight to the top of the leader board, a full second ahead of the opposition. A position that would remain unchallenged for the rest of the race.

On a high, the team ran a similar set up for the Sunday race, setting fastest sector times throughout warm-up and qualifying. During the session, Mathers was flying, but suffered bad luck when a combination of traffic and a series of red flags saw him only able to post second, despite showing the fastest 1^st sector time of the Club AWD class. With track temperatures spiking and the tyres dropping off, the talented wheelman had to settle for the second step on day two.

As well as taking a couple of well-earned trophies back to Cross Roads’ burgeoning trophy cabinet, Mather’s textbook drive also netted a new Pirelli lap record of 53.505 seconds.

On accepting his accolades, Mathers was quick to thank those who got him there. ‘This one is for everyone who worked so hard for Brands,’ he beamed, ‘RCM, who stayed up until 6am on the Friday prior to the race, dynoing the car, Joe and Lee from Cross Roads, Mark at TDR and of course, Subaru UK for their assistance with parts. The new system, which has been designed and hand-fabricated here in the UK, utilises T304 63mm Aerospace grade stainless steel tubing and precision CNC mandrel bends to optimise gas-flow and improve throttle response across the rev range.

The open-neck downpipe houses a free-flowing 200 cell sports catalyst, providing the perfect balance between full race/road legality and ultimate performance. This latest dump valve kit from Forge contains everything needed for an easy OEM-quality fitment and the valve will work well on both standard and modified examples. On the standard set-up, air is compressed by the turbo, and heated in the process, before being re-compressed, and re-heated.

These valves take into account the car’s electronically controlled bypass valves, where fitted, and are recommended where the car’s boost pressure has been increased by an ECU software upgrade or simply for those wanting an improved Blow off sound, a more efficient operation, or simply as a solution to the many failures that have occurred.
The most common complaint on the OEM solenoid valve is a split diaphragm preventing the valve from opening fully, or not at all. This doesn’t always result in a check engine light, as the valve can still be blown open by the boost pressure. Forge’s engineers have seen many valves with this problem during testing. The other common problem is that the diaphragm retaining ring is made from very thin plastic that goes brittle with heat cycles, and eventually fails. This may prevents the diaphragm from sealing correctly, causing the same problems as mentioned above. This particular failure has also been known to result in the valve falling apart upon removal from the turbo, though in extreme cases, bits of plastic can enter the turbo and destroy it.

Forge’s alternative is a fully engineered solution offering both significantly improved reliability .The new vales are piston based, with no internal diaphragm to fail. Being of all aluminium construction, it replaces the original unit with a pressure/vacuum operated piston valve that still also retains the desirable OEM ECU control over valve actuation. This design of valve has been proved on the VAG scene for many years. The spring is interchangeable for different levels of boost, and the solenoid is ‘plug and play’ with the wiring harness which is included.
